Community Action

Involvement in the community is an important part of the way our branch attempts to meet its goals. The following are some of the projects that we support.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Monterey Peninsula Branch of AAUW awards four scholarships to deserving college and university students each year. They are given to students from our local institutions: Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) and California State University at Monterey Bay (CSUMB).

TECH TREK SCHOLARSHIP

Our branch is committed to send at least one young woman to the Tech Trek math/science camp at Stanford University each summer. The student must be entering eighth grade and is selected following an application/interview process.

THE HUMAN RACE

We join with other non-profit groups on the Monterey peninsula to raise money for projects we are funding.

CHILD CARE

Our branch, working with other non-profit organizations, the City of Monterey and officials at the Presidio of Monterey, reached approval for public use of an empty Child Development Center located on army property. The collaborative nonprofit organizations requested and were granted $200,000 by the Monterey Neighborhood Improvement Committee. This money along with approximately $300,000 from Monterey general funds was used to renovate the building, which is now open as a "state of the art" Child Development Center.

Children from all parts of the Peninsula are welcome. Our goal is to assure that at least 30% of the children attending the center are from lower income families who are able to attend the center through subsidies.

"EDUCATING THE FORGOTTEN MAJORITY"

In 1996 the branch conducted a study regarding appropriate counseling and programs for those high school students who do not plan to complete a four year college degree program. This study resulted in over 30 recommendations to local school boards. To follow up on this study, personnel in all school districts on the Monterey Peninsula as well as at Monterey Peninsula College were interviewed and local educational programs were reviewed.
